Information on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
Dear Members,
The IRA was passed in 2022 with components that incentivizes economic growth and investment under the IRS tax code. Since the IRA has tax credits tied to Labor standards it creates favorable environment for the union construction industry and SMART/Sheet Metal Workers.
As an example, the G-14 battery plant in Moses Lake, WA has used the IRA. Keeping the IRA intact with strong Labor Standards is key to attracting future projects in Local #55.
- Developers and end users are incentivized to use union labor on projects under the IRA.
- Receive a tax credit for Labor/apprentice standards.
- Developers/end users tax credits can increase up to a multiply of five times if labor standards are met.
- 15% Apprentice Standard for projects starting in 2024
- Complaints for PW and Apprentice violations will violate terms for tax credits
- Penalties will be Back Payment plus 6% to the worker and $5k x each worker
Again, the IRA is a catalyst for quality job creation in local #55. We hope you will reach out to our elected Federal officials and encourage them to support the Inflation Reduction Act with strong labor standards.
