Building Fishing Access For The Next Generation | The Hood Park Project
The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance takes you through the journey of a recent project at Hood Park in Burbank, Washington where volunteers worked to improve fishing access for their community.
Volunteers from local unions including SMART Local 55, IBEW, LiUNA, UA, OPCMIA, and Ironworkers came together; united in their efforts to build two new fishing piers.
The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, partnering with AccuDock and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, chose this project identifying the need for long-lasting fishing access at a location off the Snake River popular with local anglers in the region.
The location at Hood Park on Lake Wallula was specifically chosen due to many young people and their families camping at the park but not having great access to the fishing opportunities on the banks of the ponds.
The docks are ADA-accessible, making this project even more special to the volunteers involved. It provides all people–regardless of age, physical ability, or skill level–with access to the water to enjoy their time fishing to the fullest.
As members in the video attest, we are working to leave this place a little better than we got it and do so with projects that outlast us and are there for generations to come.
The docks were quickly put to use as the USA hosted our Inaugural Tri-Cities BCTC Take Kids Fishing event. Over 200 youth and their families joined those involved for a great day of fishing with many experiencing their first time fishing. Participants were given a fishing rod and tackle to take home with them, so the next generation of anglers can enjoy the sport for years to come.
