SMART Local 55 | Diversity Committee
Purpose of the Committee
SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, is one of North America’s most dynamic and diverse unions with 208,000 members. Every day, thousands of women play a critical role in making SMART one of the leading Unions in North America. The SMART Diversity Committee supports its diverse members by providing assistance in obtaining training and leadership skills; by advocating on behalf of women in the trade and by mentoring new and potential members.
Purpose of the Committee
- To educate the women of the local union of labor’s position on local, state and national laws regarding women’s issues and diversity.
- To build self-esteem.
- To provide leadership and educational training for women members so that they may become more active in the local union and seek leadership positions.
- To inform all union members about women and family issues.
- To encourage women members to become politically active.
- To discuss problems of women workers in the workplace with the local union leadership.
- To become active with other labor and women’s organizations supported by the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 55.
- To support the local union’s program.
